I’m quite excited about this new direction. It enables me to explore larger ideas with out having as much concern about limited funds and finding specific locations for the works.

Obviously there are many new limitations that scale brings but these don’t require an abandoning of the idea rather a rework.

I’m quite pleased with how Deliberation was resolved, there were a few compromises as a desire to tidy up some wiring and poor unsoldering skills resulted in the cooking of my ultra sonic sensor. The replacement didn’t arrive in time so an infra red one took its place and has a much limited range, requiring the viewer to be much closer before affecting the work (not ideal but workable).

I liked how the Lego man added a sense of scale to the work. I am also pleased with the tie to Lego (which was the catalyst for this work) though in future I will explore creating my own people to get away from the Lego theme. Additionally adding the window head tied into previous explorations of self. and gives a little nod towards the influences of surrealists in my work.

After starting with a full palette of colours I dropped the colours back to just red and blue. Many discussions of colour and mood put red and blue at polar opposites, calm and excitement, and I thought conceptually this helped focus the idea of the battle of shifting moods regarding a choice and visually it kept a more consistent mood than the rainbow of colours gave in the full colour trial.

The user interaction is very simple and is unlikely to cause any jumping or waving. People may or may not discover the link between proximity and the work, its not important. Whether they do or not they will still only be given the single choice (depicted by one static colour) when “too” close as apposed to the full shifting range when stepping back.

On a technical level, I need to work on my modelling skills and maybe acquire some more appropriate tools, bit for this piece the standard of workman ship was adequate and I’m happy with the organic nature of the cabling.

I think this work stands up on it’s own, but can visualise it as part of a collection of similar works. Again very excited about this direction and looking forward exploring it further.

Red excitement, Blue calm, (some even put fear in the purple hues in between) the whole thing of having how possible choice are viewed as time and circumstance changed just seemed to sit better with these colours. Also visually it fits better with the mood.

Very bad idea, a bit crap at soldering = very crap at unsoldering, and it looks like I cooked it. Very sad, will have to have a closer look at it later but for now am going with an infra red detector, less range means people will need to be much closer than I had wanted but it will work in a pinch.

Deliberation

After much deliberation I decided to call it deliberation.

The work is about choices, decisions, how did I find myself here ?
What paths were taken? but it also looks at the nature of choice and determinism.
Is there really a choice ? Will all choices lead to the same outcomes ?
From a distance there appears to be multiple choices, they fade in and out of favour, the longer you look at them the more they shift, what seemed right before no longer seems to be the best option.

The work contains an avatar of my self, the lego man, dwarfed by the choices before him.
As he’s viewed these choices fluctuate, but once approached they blend together, they are all the same.

Step back to perceive your choices.

Lego- I would realy like to incorporate lego into this work, but not film of legos the actual bricks. So I tending towards something physical.
Instillation art is what Im most interested in at the moment, but build large scale instillations requires more resourses than I have available to me.
The beauty of Lego was it allowed me to build my own worlds in miniature, so this is where this project should go.

I will build a mini Instillation.

Semester 2 and its new classes new projects

I am, I like , I want.

First task was to deliver a Pucha Kucha style presentation 20 slides 20 seconds a slide.
Like all thinks initially suspicious of the who this, most likely due to my inability to properly read instructions.

After a few false starts decided to take the whole I am thing way back to my first creative memory… Lego.
Once I had this start it all started to fall into place.
I have always drawn a parallel to my interest in e-media and my interest in lego, for me the computer is a box of possibilities as was my box of legos was, they both game me an escape in to imagined worlds. Lego block – pixel there are heaps of similarities could go on for ages.

So slides about lego slides about computers then as I was going all the way back Dr Suess via Dali through to artistic influences. Ending in a distilation of what drives me.

Colour, Light, Imagined worlds.

Worlds is a loose term could be spaces or even just an idea somewhere to escape into.

The presentation.
I made notes for the slides culled it donwn to what could be said in 20sec. The trouble was It only just fit if I had to stop and think/remember to say something then I wouldnt get it all in. I decided to use notes.
Bad Idea, I never use notes I’m much happier winging it, I’m guessing notes work for organised people. Long story short, screwed up my timings, gave up on the notes and winged it. Much happier missed out on lots I planned to say, but it went ok.
No notes ever again never never. Learn to want to say less.

you can check out the presentation files here.
